I have been a doctor for over 35 years, the last six at St Francis Medical, and my medical experience has been broad and varied. Likewise, my life experiences have been equally diverse, rewarding and challenging. I believe that to effectively address patient problems, often both of these worlds need to brought to the consultation. My philosophy is always ‘first do no harm’, followed closely by ‘being aware of what I don’t know’.
Hailing from a tiny slate-mining village in North Wales, my vocation has taken me around the world but the bulk of my work has been in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. My early career was in Emergency Medicine before moving to more family-friendly General Practice over 20 years ago. Working recently in remote indigenous communities in the Eastern Kimberley has drawn on both of these spheres of medical practice.
I am committed to patient-focused care and am an advocate for evidence-based medicine, meaning you are more likely to leave my room without antibiotics than with! I describe myself as a ‘non-religious’ Christian and view my patients health from a holistic perspective. With passing years my social and sporting interests have been pruned back but revolve around home and family. I can still fit in a few runs a week thanks to my orthopaedic surgeon and painkillers. Lastly, I have an irrepressible sense of humour and appreciate that “a merry heart really does a spirit, soul and body good, like medicine”.
